Question: What is the average salary of an entry level tax preparer? I was offered a position with Colbert Tax Services.

Should I respond? Is it worth it? Anyone else work with Colbert Tax Servies?

Answer: They will probably pay you a set $10-15 per hour, but then they will pay you a percentage of what you bring in to the office over and about the pay you took.

Every year you will get faster and faster at doing peoples taxes and you will start to see the same people over and over who will be making more money and paying more for their tax preparations…

Anyway, if you hustle you can make $20 an hour or so, plus you could take those skills and open you own tax prep/bookkeeping service.

Question: Is any kind of licensing required to be a paid Tax Return Preparer in Missouri?

The federal government does not require licensing, but some states (notably California) do require you to be registered in order to prepare tax returns for others.

Does anyone know or have a link to information specific to the state of Missouri?

Answer: No, nothing here in MO. I’ve seen bait shops and “buy here, pay here” car dealers who prepare tax returns as a sideline. Pretty crazy here.

Question: Does passing the Enrolled Agent Exam helped getting a job as a tax preparer in a CPA firm?

I am an entry level person when it comes to accounting and taxes.
I had only done 60 basic 1040s return with Schedule A, B, C, D, E. for a friend a while back ago.

Answer: The EA designation would help you.

Not sure you’d pass the test, though.
