Question: Federal Tax ID numbers.?
I know that businesses need to have them listed in some form or the other because it is part of the public forum. Some are much easier to find then others. Are there any online sources for Fed Tax ID listings that anyone knows of, (I found an official on last year but got a new computer).
Answer: you can apply for an fed id number through irs.gov. they are not really public. although they are included on w-2′s, 1099′s, etc.

Forum draws candidates for Kane sheriff, treasurer
Kane County candidates running in the Feb. 2 primary election were on hand last night at Batavia’s City Hall for a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Candidates responded to questions from the audience. Among the participating candidates were Don Kramer of Batavia and Rob Russell of South Elgin, Republican candidates for sheriff.

Question: How do I find out to collect New York State sales tax if I want to sell things online?
What should I do first, apply for a business license or apply for a permit to collect sales tax? How does it work for New York State? Does an online customer pay taxes based on my county’s taxes?
Answer: Normally if you ship items to people in NYS you will need to charge sales tax. If you are shipping out of state, the sale should not be taxable.

Question: Can I deduct California use tax as a medical expense?
I itemize my personal income tax every year. I deduct lots of medical expenses every year because I am disabled. I buy stuff out of state and country. I have to pay use taxes on these medical purchases because they are out of state and country and are shipped to me. Can I deduct the use tax as a medical expense/deduction too? This question is for the year 2009. I will be deducting the sales tax for all purchases I’ve made this year in state as taxes already paid. I’m not sure if use tax is included in that particular deduction. Any help would be appreciated.
I keep extremely good records and receipts.
Answer: If you maintain detailed records of all of your medical expense purchases and can show where the use tax that you paid applies, you should not have any problem in applying these use tax payments to your purchases of medical supplies from out of state sources. However, be forewarned, the burden of proof rests upon your shoulders, the IRS will automatically assume that you are incorrect unless you can prove otherwise through detailed records of all of your purchases.
