Question: What can happen to you if you gamble online?

I’ve heard that gambling online is illegal, although I believe no one has ever been prosecuted for it.

If someone were to try to make a secondary income and received a steady flow on income by betting online, what could the punishment be?

How likely or unlikely is the person to be prosecuted?

And why is it illegal… is it because of tax evasion reasons or just a quality of life issue?

Answer: America has never really bothered to make specific federal laws that ban online gambling. Although they point to some bill from the sixties that outlaws telephone sports betting as proof it’s technically illegal.

The new bill passed last October really is aimed at companies and not individuals.

Some states have made their own laws, but again have done little to enforce them.

The biggest issue is likely to be tax. If you make an income and don’t declare it, it is very likely that sooner or later they will charge you with tax evasion.

As to why it is technically illegal, it is just a typical Bush family values argument. Bill Frist was the guy who slid the bill through, adding it to an unrelated ports security act. He said that gambling destroyed families, but then completely legalized horse race betting as part of the bill. Allowing American companies to start offering horse race betting online. Seems like a weird double standard, but there you go.

Given that over a million Americans gamble online, I’d find it hard to believe that you will be caught and punished any time soon. Just don’t forget to pay your tax.

Question: I am interested in investing in real estate. Are buying properties through tax sales a good investment?

From what I’ve found out, it is possible to purchase property for the back taxes that are owed, but unpaid. I would like information on how to find these properties and how to purchase them. I think there’s an auction. Do I have to attend the auction in person, or is it possible to purchase online, like on ebay? I live in the central area of California (Fresno). Is the procedure different for different areas of the state or country? Is there a website where I can go to obtain more information on this subject for my area? Any information you can provide would greatly help. Thank you.

Answer: If it was such a hot property, and they saw they were going to lose it, why didn’t it sell? Good advice I got once was never to invest in something I knew nothing about. There are websites which charge a fee for such information. Auctions on tax properties are “As is, where is” propositions. Some countries will not allow foreign ownership of land. Often, too, permanent residency is a bit of a hard go as well, depending on the country.
Beware on the online “Tax Auction/Govt. Seizures/ confiscation sites. Some list properties that are years ago sold and the listings have not been removed. I type in a small town to see what they list. That tells me a lot. Also, beware of houses where kitchens were ripped out being sold by law enforcement. These are usually former METH labs and could still be very hazardous to your health.

Answer: In New York, the buyer is responsible for paying the tax. The same is true for Iowa. You’ll have to check the other states individually. Just google the name of the state and the words “state government” right after it to get each state’s website and then look up “sales tax for online sales.”

Answer: Thats pretty good. Keep saving! If you dont make a ton of money you can still make a least a million in savings if you dont spend a lot.
