Question: How can I find a good tax preparer?

I have moved to a new town and have a complicated tax situation that requires a very experienced yet trustworthy tax advisor/preparer to file for both federal and state levels. Do I just walk into an H&R Block and wish for the best? Any way I can get a referral (In los angeles). Thanks.
My main concern is that I don’t want to be overcharged. I was charged $900 by my tax preparer 2 years ago yet the IRS still came after me for amounts owed so I didn’t want to go to him again, he skipped town and is wanted for a lot of tax fraud so I got worried and never filed last year so I am afraid of all the penalties and don’t want to be taken advantage of and overcharged by a tax preparer. So basically if someone has a personal referal or know of a site with ratings for preparers or feedback that’s maybe what i’m looking for.

Answer: dont trust h & r block or liberty tax or jackson hewitt, …they all hire people who are very new to the business.

i recomend that you talk to people who you know and have them give you a recomendation.

interview your potential preparer to find out what he/she knows.

and like the guy above said, it may be just a walk in the park….wow $900 !!! i want to do your taxes.
