Tax Preparer Liability
Question: What liability do tax preparers have?
My tax preparer made a mistake when entering information on my tax forms from last year. This mistake may cost me $10,000 in back taxes from last year and thousands less on my return this year. Are tax professionals typically held liable for these mistakes or does the fault most often fall back on the tax payer themselves?
Answer: What is the real problem? Did the preparer make a mistake that will cost you $10,000 extra or did the preparer make a mistake by overlooking a $10,000 liability that you had anyway? It is unlikely that a preparer will make a mistake that can’t be fixed that generates additional tax and if you owed it in the first place, you haven’t been harmed. To the extent that you have to pay extra you may have some private claim against the preparer.

How to Pick the Right Tax Preparer
California Tax Evasion

Question: What is the best way to report tax evasion?
I have tried contacting the IRS and the state taxation department about a serious tax cheat who is hoarding over $100,000 of taxable money to a secret offshore account in the Bahamas. He brags that he doesn’t need to pay taxes and that he won’t get caught.
I contacted the IRS tax evasion unit in Fresno, California but they did nothing. Same thing with the state tax cheat department.
My question is:
(1) Should I report the tax cheat to my county prosecutor/district attorney’s office?
(2) What proof do I need to provide?
(3) Are there any other places that I should call or write to report him? I know he hires illegal aliens to work in his business.
I have sent letters to the IRS yet the person is getting away with murder. He bought a new Mercedes and drives it around town. It seems that the IRS and state are not doing anything.
Answer: 1. How do you know that they did nothing? The IRS will not let you in on what is going on. He may already be on their radar screen, and no, they would not tell you that.
2. What EVIDENCE of tax evasion do you have? The IRS will not act upon hearsay. If you were his bookkeeper and had first hand knowledge of what was going on along with documentary evidence of the movement of money they would be interested. There are lots of blowhards who brag about not paying taxes but actually do. (I know, as I prepare a couple of their returns!)

California Tax Audit

Question: Do you think there are as many Accounting staff positions in LA as there are in NY?
Considering under 2 years of experience and in the audit/tax fields.
Also, what is the salary range?
Another question somewhat related, how many years of experience is required for an MBA to become a CPA in California? Does the experience have to include audit?
Answer: LA has a lot of business, but I think NY has more business. I think that LA and NY are comparable, however.
The salary for starting out of school is 45-50k.
You don’t need an MBA to become a CPA in California. You just need a four year degree with 24 business credits and 24 accounting credits (you might want to double check me on that). There are two licenses in CA, one that allows audit and one that doesn’t. If you want to be able to perform attest, you must have attest experience otherwise no audit experience is required.

California Tax Appeal

Question: Does anyone care that we have to pay for Scott Peterson’s appeal ?
In the current state of our economy in California and the nation, do people realize all tax payers pay for he idiotic defense appeals of all criminals > Including Scott Peterson’s appeals ? The absurd legal system we have mandates the taxpayers pay for all appeals of criminals in our jails. This includes all murderers, rapists, drug dealers, gang bangers, etc. Is this the most stupid use of our money or what ? I cannot believe we don’t put a stop to this abuse and top paying for all these stupid appeals for convicted criminals.
rickino, I guess you don’t mind paying for Charles Manson’s appeals every other year
Even with the appeals proccess some mistakes will be made. The system is not perfect but why should we pay billions of dollars in taxes for these tried and convicted criminals ?
Not a Republicajn, just someone with common sense…!
Answer: If that brings your piss to a boil, I would suggest not looking at what else taxpayer money goes to pay for.
