Online Tax Return Uk

Question: HM Inland Revenue Internet Problem?

I try to do the first step on the online Tax Return and every time it says : please amend the post code.
I used to live in the UK but now I live in France and my address which I used for another Tax Revenue a year ago is not working. even when I tried my old post-code from England it still displayed the same message. I deleted the History and the Cookies and it is still doing it. The help-line is busy and they are constantly cutting me off plus calling them is costing me a fortune. What should I do?

Answer: Change country in the address – that’s the first step – then it stops demanding a post code.

Tax Return Dates Uk

Question: I contracted as a limited company in the UK, now I have to file a personal tax return – help!!?

I contracted for 5 months (March 07 – July 07) and set myself up as a limited company to pay less tax. I used an accounting firm to sort this out for me. Now I have to file a tax return for the tax year 06/07 and I’m completely clueless as to how to do it. Do I include the limited company earnings? I assume it’s relatively straightforward for the months up to March when I started contracting, as I was in ‘normal’ employment up to then and have a P60 for the job I finished in February 06.

How do I disclose the income I earned from March 1 (date I started contracting) – April 5 (end of tax year)?

Answer: Hi,
The tax year in the uk runs from the 6th April to the 5th April the year after.

Therefore, for your 06-07 return, you will only be required to declare your earnings from when you started in March up until the 5th of April 2007.

Any income you earnt after that date would be declared in your tax return for 07-08 in a years time – and as you rightly said, your PAYE earnings will not be affected, the inland revenue will already have it on record that you were employed up until March.

If you use an accounting firm, they should be doing all the necessaries for you – all you will need to do is submit your receipts for any work-related expenses you have incurred.

Hope that helped – don’t forget that tax returns have to be filed by the end of January to avoid being fined!

Check Tax Return Status Online

Question: Login with the URL that ends with c=a,not c=b ???

I filed my tax returns online, went to check my status. i could not login. asked customer service why, and the answer was: ‘you need to login with the URL that ends with c=a, not c=b.’ I have no idea what that means! does anyone know or have a simple explanation?? thanks.

Answer: he could be talking about the post parameters…. these are like http://www.yahoo.com/?p=3 where p=3 is the post parameter…. so if the url you’re using has something in it where c=b, change it to c=a… like http://www.yahoo.com/?c=b should be http://www.yahoo.com/?c=a….. thats a stupid customer service response though, i’m in IT and it confuses me!

Question: Is Financial Aid considered income for taxes in Michigan?

I’m curious if I have to report my financial aid as income on my taxes when filing taxes at the end of the year. I’m 19 and attending Baker College Online and live in Michigan, if that has anything to do with it.

BAKER COLLEGE GRANT 375.00
EST MI COMPETITIVE SCH 1750.00
MICHIGAN PROMISE 1000.00
PELL GRANT 3068.00
TUITION INCENTIVE PROGRAM 2688.00
Jess, I’m not asking about filing FOR my financial aid. I’m talking about filing taxes and whether I need to report my financial aid that I already received as income. Thank you for trying to help though.

Answer: Neh, Jess, that’s not correct.

The tax treatment of financial aid depends on two things – the form of the aid, and how the aid is spent.

Any aid that represents payment for work – and I’m talking here about things like the Federal Work-Study program or the stipends that are paid to graduate students (or advanced undergrads) for working as a teaching assistant or a research assistant – those forms of aid are always taxable, because they’re considered a form of “earned income”.

If you are a degree-seeking student and you receive a scholarship or a fellowship and use the money for:

Tuition
Fees
Books
Supplies or
Equipment

the scholarship or fellowship is tax-free, and need not be reported to the IRS.

On the other hand, if any scholarship or fellowship money is used to pay for:

Room
Board or
Travel

those funds are taxable, and must be reported.

Pell Grants are treated as scholarships for the purpose of IRS regulations. So, again – if the money is used exclusively to pay for tuition, books, fees and equipment, it is non-taxed, and does not need to be reported.

So – long story short – so long as you did not use any of that $8281 to pay for room, board or travel expenses, all of it is non-taxed, and you don’t need to report it. If you used any part of it for a non-allowable expense, you must report the amount that was paid.

Good luck! I hope that helped. For more info – you can review the rules in IRS Publication 970, which I’ve linked to, below.

……….there is a link to a pdf file for download ……however – how would HMRC know my email address ????
I have never heard of HMRC contacting people by email regarding tax refunds and I always thought you had to CLAIM a tax refund (in other words they will never TELL you?)

Answer: I used to work for HMRC, and we never sent emails to anyone, if we wanted to contact someone we would write or phone. Also if they have discovered you are due a refund they would just make the payment and notify you, you wouldn’t have to apply if they’ve already noticed. Also the above email doesn’t mention your national insurance number which is what they use to identify you, they also don’t use terms like ‘fiscal activity’ I agree with the other posters it’s a scam, you were right to be concerned.
