Question: US Tax Forms: Short versus Long?

Which tax preparation service would best apply to my situation? I quit my job in california on September 2007 to work in new york , and I rent an apartment in new jersey. To sum it all up, I have taxes on all 3 states. I have a feeling that I’m going to end up paying IRS back. If I opted to use the Long Form (with itemized deductions), will it make a difference or lessen the amount I may end up paying the IRS.

Answer: Using the long version vs. the short version won’t make you owe less taxes.. it won’t make any difference. The short form was designed to simplify the tax filing experience for those who are for example, single with W2 income to report and taking the standard deduction. You will either be able to itemize deductions or you won’t, that all depends on if your allowable deductions sum to more than the standard deduction. You cannot take both. If you itemize, you will want the 1040 form (long version) if not, you can use the 1040-EZ.
However, for state, you will need to file using for CA, 540 NR.. and the Schedule A (540 NR) for partial year resident.. same with your other 2 states, I am just not sure what those forms are called. All three states you will file as partial year resident using an NR form. Best of Luck.
