Best Tax Preparer Software

Question: About to start work as a tax preparer.?

Hi, I’m about to start a job as a tax preparer for a small firm. It’s been awhile since I’ve done individual returns. I don’t exactly remember what software he uses.

Anyway, do you have any recommended study/reading material I should go through before starting work?

Answer: Congratulations.

This is going to be a challenging 2008 tax season.

How current are you with the current tax law changes as you did not provide any information about your background???

Best things to do are:
1. Pull up the various tax forms to familiarize yourself with them
2. Learn the software that your firm has and KNOW how to use it
3. Take a Tax seminar that highlights the 2008 tax law changes.

The seminars are available through local state and professional tax groups so contact them to see which is available in your area!

Question: If I changed my number of exemptions from 1 to 0 will I see more of a refund?

I will not have my son for a dependent on my next tax return & will not be able to claim his education credits & my tax preparer suggested I change my number of exemptions from 1 to 0 otherwise I I would be paying in next year instead of a refund & I was wondering if this was the right thing to do?

Answer: If you leave your exemptions at 1 then you will probably pay in next year but if you changeit to zero then you should get a refund next year. I always claim zero on my w4 so that I don’t have to pay in at the end of the year.
