Question: Tax deduction Questions?

Can I get a tax deduction for having a loan on my car last year ?
Is there any difference in hiring a Tax consultant and Filing it myself online if my case is straight, ie no additional income, mortgages etc, just one source of income and standard deductions.
Will an accountant be able to give me a better refund as compared to online filing

Answer: If it’s your personal car, no there’s no deduction. If it’s a car used for a business you own (NOT for commuting between your home and your job), then maybe.

If your return is pretty straightforward, then you’ll get the same results as a paid preparer unless one of you makes a mistake.

Question: How do you book NCT in Ireland?

Do you get a letter in the post like with the road tax or can you just book it? I tried online but i think there is something wrong with the site. Is there any other way of doing it? And how long before you NCT is dew do you have to book it?

Answer: I think you used to get a reminder but I didn’t this year, I forgot and it had run out when I noticed.

The NCT website is down for maintenance I just checked, they will be back up and running fairly quickly I would say. Its http://www.ncts.ie/ when its working just click on the “book test” option. You need your car registration number and its date of first registration (its (B) 2nd line down on the registration document). You can then choose the location/date and time that you want.

Their telephone number if you wanted to ring instead is 1890 412 413 and they are open 8am and 8pm Mon-Thurs and 8am – 6pm on Fridays. I expect they will be closed over New Year.

Mine was due in July and I wanted to go to Macroom test centre, first date they could give me was 20th November. I just kept the letter of confirmation in the glove box in case the Gards stopped me. Trouble is when the car finally passed they backdated the certificate to July so I’ve lost 6 months technically.

You’d be best to book your test as soon as possible if your NCT is due.
