Question: Do you claim your taxes from your online poker winnings? Are you even suppose to claim it as tax? +++?

What happens if I try and cash out $500, am I suppose to pay the tax for this ammount? BTW, I play on pokerstars and live in Canada.

Also, one more question hopefully someone can answer: Pokerstars replied to me in an email and said that if I request my cashout in CDN (since I live in Canada) and that if my cashout is equal to $1,000 USD or more, that I can get free courier service. How come it has to be over $1,000 USD for them to give you free courier service?

Im asking because I have never deposited nor cashed out from pokerstars, and this will be my first cashout, so I’d like to make sure that I do it correctly and receieve my cash.

Answer: You seem to be asking a lot of questions that can more easily be answered by pokerstars. They are very good at answering questions.

I don’t know Canada tax law, but in the US, you are supposed to declare the income in the year you won it, doesn’t matter when you cash it out. I’m not suggesting a lot of people follow the rules, but that’s what they are.

And courier service costs money. Just get regular mail. But I guess they’ll suck up the charge for people cashing out a larger amount to be nice to their higher playing customers.

You will need last years tax return as part of the confirmation process, and you will need to choose either 1040A or 1040 long form, depending on other circumstances.
