Free Online Tax Canada

Question: Is there somewhere I can go online to see how much my tax refund will be (Canada)?

I am not sure if I want to go to H&R block to get my income taxes done- or if I should do them myself… I am wondering how much money I am looking to get back so I can figure what H&R would deduct and if its even worth it for me…
I’m sure theres a place to go that does them for you free but doesnt let you print or file online… cant remember!!

Answer: Go to www.genutax.ca

From there you can download a free trial version and plug in all your numbers and get your results. But, you’re right, you can’t netfile or print it unless you buy the program.

I have been using this program for a few years now. I like it. It’s really easy to use and the best part is that they send me free updates each year.

Question: Income tax and stipends?

Im aware that my PhD stipend (£12k+) is tax free.
The question is, does any income from a part time job get taxed right off at the new 20% rate, or, only get taxed if my part time job goes over the personal allowance of like £5k?

Answer: You will be taxed at 20% if your part-time earnings go over £5435. You do not have to do a Tax Return, as you do not come within the self-assessment criteria.

Question: Tax return question?

All I have is a W2, I made $20,685 & about $1700 were taken out for taxes this past year. Turbo tax (an free online tax return site), told me I’d be getting $400 back. Last year I went to H&R block after making about $13,000 & made $800, after looking online & it said I only was getting $400 back. I haven’t officially filed yet, so should I go in H&R block & see if I can get more money, or just do it for free online & take the $400. Anyone know??

Answer: You are in a higher tax bracket – making more money. Therefore, you had to pay the IRS more in taxes.

Unless you have any itemizing (property taxes, etc.) it doesn’t sound like it would be worth the money to pay H&R block to do your taxes.

Question: I need to file an injured spouse tax return. Should I file it myself online (at one of the free tax sites)?

& then mail the 8379 form in later? Would this affect the processing of the return since it would be sent in later? Or should I pay someone to fill my taxes out for me?

Answer: If you file it online (http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=201897,00.html ), you don’t need to mail it in later (and, if you did, it might “confuse” the IRS and delay or eliminate the form).
