Question: Each year I get a refund from over payment of income tax and?

each year I get a statement of the refunds that I have to include in my tax return. Why do I have to pay income tax on income refunded for over payment the year before.
If this money had never been deducted and then returned I would not have paid tax on it, so why must it be included as income tax for the next year?

Answer: this is not necessarily true.

some people itemize and deduct what the state takes. this makes it so that they don’t pay tax on that amount.

if that is your case then you have to include it in income to pay tax on it.
