Where Is My Amended Return Refund
Question: Plan on using a 1040X to amend missing 1098-T information and could use some help. Please read details thanks.
So I filed my taxes online through Turbo Tax yesterday and got a 1098-T form in the mail today. Upon receiving it I realized that I forgot to include my tution and expenses for the Spring semester at the begining of the year which could earn me a $52 refund. I was told to use a 1040X form to amend the error after I recevie my tax return that I just filed. Does anyone which 1040X file I will have to fill out and where to get it? Is it complicated or is at simple as transfering information found on my 1098-T form that I missed to the 1040X and in turn would it only taking me a couple of minutes to fill out? Detailed answers would be deeply appreciate. Thanks!
What if I originally filed a 1040ez originally and not a 1040A which sounds to be more complicated.Answer: There is only one 1040X. It’s a 2 page spreadsheet. Go to IRS.GOV and search on 1040X. Print the form AND the instructions.
Print out a blank 1040A.
Do the tax return again, CORRECTLY. Do not send it in.Then sit down with the 1040X.
Use your original return to load column A.
Use the dummy return to load column C.
Then line by line compare A with C. If there is a change, put the difference in column B. If A is higher than C, make sure you put () around the number to show it’s negative.Add an explanation on page 2. Attach any forms that are new or different, send it in–but not before the first return processes.
Yes, it’s convoluted and complicated. Doing one will teach you to never send in a tax return prematurely again. (A tax pro can do it for you, but they charge $100. If your income is less than $40K, the IRS walk-in offices will help you, but the tollfree line CAN’T.)
