Question: Lived in NJ worked in NYC for 4 months in ‘07 then moved to CA. NY W2 lists entire year’s income. How to file?

Our accountant is claiming that there isn’t a way to break out the income actually earned while physically working in NYC unless it is listed that way on the W2. The company says it has issued the W2 correctly (which lists the entire years income in box 16 and nothing for local wages in box 18). Thus NY is claiming that we owe taxes on that whole amount. We filed NJ taxes and CA taxes. How are we supposed to list the income on our NY tax form? Please help!!! Thanks!

Answer: You file the NYS part time resident form. it is simple. You will pay NY/NJ (this is a different question why you have to do both) tax for 4/12th of your pay for the year, and 8/12th of your pay to CA.

Just make sure you have the correct forms. I did it. A pain in the butt, but not that big of a deal

Question: going self employed but working for same company as im employed by! Help on self employement in the UK!!?

I am currently employed and my boss has restructured the business. He asked me to go self employd as of December 2007. I will get a cheque each month for 33% of bankings on the business. No experience of being self employed. What will i have to pay. Will i have to do a tax return for the 1 month before end January? Anyone know any rescourses that would be helpfull. Alreasy read the hmrc and direct.gov.uk stuff. Do i have to register myself as a company? what can i offset against tax? petrol car stuff etc????

Answer: Find a good accountant. For a few hundred pounds he will do it all and save you money by claiming for things you would never have thought of.
