Military Tax Filing Free

Question: We are military and when we filed our taxes?

I was given the option to either put in the combat pay or not too. If I put the combat pay in there, my taxes went down by almost $3,000 but when I took it out, it went back up (I use Turbo Tax)

My husband flies in and out of combat zones so, 6 months of are income were tax free.

Did I do something illegal by not putting the combat pay in? I’m a little worried here, as I have never had a rebate so high before (It was $7,021 this year that we get back for federal)
That is why I like when my husband flies over there…. If he steps on foreign combat soil for one minute that entire month is tax free…

No time to enjoy it as it is going straight to bills though…

Answer: Combat pay is not taxable by the Federal Government, but might be the State Government. One day in a combat zone exempts the entire month pay from Federal taxes. It legal to exclude this pay, so enjoy the big refund!
