Question: how to itemize California deductions for 2007 tax return?
I filed my taxes myself, but I believe I have misunderstood something.
In 2007 my wages were x dollars. I won a competition that resulted in an award of y dollars. I donated y dollars to a charity. However, I end up paying an extra $340 to California taxes than I would have paid if I won no award at all.Here is what happened. Since I won the award, I itemized my deductions for my California return, for a total of y dollars in deductions. My gross income for CA was x+y. After itemized deductions, my taxable income was x. If I had won no award at all, then my taxable income would be x-z, where z is the standard deduction. However, because I itemized, I did not get to take a standard deduction, so my taxable salary is x instead of x-z. I ended up paying $340 taxes on the amount z.
This seems like an inconsistency; what have I done wrong?

DUDE STATE TAX CANNOT BE DEDUCTED ON STATE TAX. DUDE THAT WILL BE WEIRED. DUDE THATS WHY IT MUST BE TAKE IT OUT. (CA PART II)
