Question: U.K. only. HMRC Online tax form. Had started own business which went bust. Never took wages/salary and had to.?

live off savings to provide a salary but as it was the start of the downturn… How does this affect my tax. Also had to pay rent up front and also buy stock. When I put nil for salary/wages how will this affect me and also my taxes? Ran everything at a loss? Or do I have to put something in the salary box as I should of been able to take a salary. Some advice please.

Answer: You say you started your own business – was this as a sole trader or did you set up a limited company?
Really need to know the answer to this first as this affects my answer to you.
EDIT: As a sole trader, you are required to enter your accounts details in the self employment section of the return. You are taxable on your profits (if any), not your drawings or wages. It sounds as if you made a loss, but only your accounts will disclose this. You can set your loss off against any tax paid in 07-08 or in the previous tax year.

Leatherman was established in 1983 in Portland, Oregon. It was founded by Tim Leatherman, and the president and CEO is Jake Nichol. Tim Leatherman went and graduated form Oregon State University and received  his major in mechanical engineering. He later started working of a knife for the Boy Scout of America. It was a Knife pliers. He continued to work on this and got his first patent in 1980. He then started to see his sales take off when you got his knife into mail-order catalogs like Early Winters and Cabela’s. Cabela’s is a name that most of us should know.

Later Leatherman moved to bigger and better facility. There was no looking back. As Leatherman grew to be a power house not only in multitools but in the world of pocket knives.  In 2007 Tim Leatherman was inducted to the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame at the Blade show in Atlanta, Georgia.
