Question: If a person claims a monetary gift on their taxes, must they also state who the gift-er was?

Let’s say a person was looking to somehow claim 13 grand that he/she “received” under the table, but since her/his income wasn’t very high in 2009 through her/his paycheck and she/he did quite a bit of home improvements which required permits, she/he is looking to somehow make that 13 grand “legally” received but can not claim it as tips since her/his job is in nursing. How exactly could this person hypothetically claim 13 grand “legally” on her/his taxes so the IRS does not do an audit?
No one “worked” for the 13 grand. Let’s simply say it was “hush” money for this hypothetical situation.

Answer: Hypothetically, I think one should contact H&R Block and ask this question…minus the fact about the 13 grand. Remember, sometimes people keep cash in their home which could’ve been used to pay for some or all of the home improvements.
