Question: What was the affect of Katrina victims relocating in Houston?
I never heard how all those people that stayed there affected the cities economy, job market, social services and tax rates etc. Did it stress out the residents or what?
Answer: I live in Houston. The stress of Katrina greatly impacted all aspects of life in Houston. Schools are suffering from over-crowding. The Dept. of Social Services is back-logged and stretched beyond the limit. Search for Jobs has become much more competitive. Tensions in schools have resulted in riots and fights, etc. Inexpensive housing is no longer available.
The federal government has provided some aide to Houston Schools, Police force and Welfare Dept. but, as always, it is never enough. Thus far, most of the evacuees are not home owners so they are not paying the taxes.
On the brighter side, I still see lots of organizations pitching in to help. Clothing, food, household items, etc. are still being distributed. Organizations are looking for ways to assimilate the new-comers to the area.
