Right now there are approximately 130,000 kids in foster care programs throughout the United States. These children are hoping to find a place they can call home, and people to call family.

Adults all over the country are attempting to expand their families by adopting a young person from a foster home. The process can be difficult and time consuming, but the end result brings joy to so many lives. It is a progression that is celebrated every November as National Adoption Month. This years’ theme is “Answering the Call – You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. There are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you.”

This celebration has earned the attention of the President. In October, Barack Obama recognized National Adoption Month with a Presidential proclamation. The document asserts that “During National Adoption Month, we honor those families that have strengthened America through adoption, and we recommit to reducing the number of children awaiting adoption into loving families.”

National Adoption Month’s origins trace back to 1976 when then-Governor Michael Dukakis established an Adoption Week in Massachusetts. President Gerald Ford became aware of this endeavor, and announced that the week would be recognized on a national level. By 1990 the event was expanded to a full month, and at the center of it all is National Adoption Day.

Saturday, November 21, 2009 will be National Adoption Day. It’s a day when law makers, judges, families and other adoption advocates work together to try and finalize as many adoptions as possible. 2009 marks the 10-year anniversary of this special occurrence and the goal is to find permanent homes for children in every state. The history of veteran’s day dates back to year 1919 when on November 12th American President Woodrow Wilson announced Armistice Day. As per the recent census there are approximately over 24.9 million military veterans in the United States alone. No doubt, solders and military personnel are assets to any country. They are the people who fight for the safety and security of their country and help ensure sovereignty of it.

 

However, later it was decided that on every 11th November every year will be observed as Veterans Day. Most federal states observe 11th November and if it is Sunday then next working day is to be observed as Veterans Day. And, if it falls on Saturday then either Saturday or Friday is to be observed as Veterans Day. Other names for Veterans Day are Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. It is also known as Armistice because November 11 was the anniversary of the signing the Armistice which ended World War I. Other countries where 11th November is celebrated as a day for remembrance apart from the U.S. are Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand along with others. However, in the U.S. not just the dead during wartime are honored but everyone who served their country is remembered on this day.

 

So in U.S. every 11th November is celebrated as Veterans Day and observed as a public holiday in honor for thousands of soldiers who died and millions of people who served their country in the battlefield. Another most important thing associated with Veteran’s Day is that you can either use Veteran’s Day, Veterans’ Day or even Veterans Day (without apostrophe), so it is never treated as a spelling mistake. Officially it’s known as Veterans Day.
