Question: City limits on property tax increases in California?

I live in Los Angeles County and the city where I live has increased our property tax rate by huge amounts each year. We paid $350 in 2006, $450 last year and $550 this year. I know the state cannot increase property taxes by more than 2% each year, so my question is if there is a limit on how much cities can increase a persons property tax each year or if they have no limit and can increase it by whatever amount they want? There have been no reassessments or change of ownership in the property.

Answer: Your assessed value can’t be increased by more than 2% per year. Your bill is almost nothing by any measure. What else has happened to your property.

Question: People from California: How do you feel about the fact that it takes 2/3rds of the state legislature to tax?

The state is broke and you can’t raise taxes. You have a minority party that controls everything because they don’t have to allow the democrats to tax anything.

And yet you can amend the constitution to make it just a majority again.

If someone started a proposal to allow just a majority of the legislature to tax instead of 2/3rds….would you vote for it?

If you answer, please list your state and party affiliation (or lack thereof)

Answer: It’s one of the stupidest things, and we are one of only 3 states with such a rule. It was pushed through as part of a large property tax reform package. It basically ensures that a small minority of the legislature in either house can hold up the state budget if they don’t get their demands met, resulting in a delayed budget every year and millions of dollars wasted.

IRS to set exam, education requirements for tax preparers
