Question: 1st time home buyers tax credit…?
My wife and I purchased our 1st home in late January 2009. When we went to do our taxes in March, our accountant told us we could receive our deduction with our 2008 taxes ($7,500) – we took it because as she said, it was an interest free loan!
Obama then changed it to 8K and it is not paid back (if I am reading it correctly).
Where does this leave my wife and I? Do we have to pay the $7,500 back? Do we get the additional $500?
Can somebody help me out?
Answer: Dear AD: You should have applied for the $8,000 credit and no repayment is required.
You will need to complete a 1040X (amended return) and claim the $8,000 (new credit).
Your accountant should correct he error.
