Tax Return Last Date

Question: Last date to pay property taxes for deduction in tax return the following year?

All my property tax statements say that the last date to send in my property tax payment is on January 31st 2010 to avoid penalties.

My question is, if I don’t send in my property tax payments by December 31st 2009, and instead, send it in January, can I still deduct my property tax when I file my 09 return in April 2010?

Answer: No. You can only deduct property taxes for the year in which you actually pay them. It makes no difference what the payment deadline is or which year the assessment is for. It’s the actual payment date that matters for income tax purposes.
