California Tax Jobs

Question: What can you tell me about Houston, Texas?
I’m looking to move to another state. Texas is not too far away and there are actually jobs there. California is done. The taxes, the traffic, the terrible education, no jobs. Now they want to raise $14 Billion in taxes and fees on everything.
I’m wanting to know what it’s like around the Houston area and suburbs. Traffic, taxes, jobs, etc. Heard Sugarland is nice.
Answer: Houston (like everywhere else) has it’s pros and cons. The economy is still better off than many parts of the country, but it is showing signs of softening. The housing prices are reasonable. The people are nice for the most part and the atmosphere is usually casual. The traffic is bad, but not the worst. The museums and theaters are great and many of them are free due to the very generous donors. We have teams for most of the major league sports.
The weather is almost unbearably hot and humid in the summer (mid-April to mid-October) but everywhere is air-conditioned. The rest of the year is nice but the weather changes frequently. Most of the outdoor activities are based on water sports..there are several nice lakes withing 100 miles that are great for water skiing or sailing and Galveston is only 45 min away, even if it’s not a great beach. Memorial Park is nice for jogging, but it can be crowded since it is one of the few places like that. Golf is big and there are some nice courses if you like to play that are open year-round.
Houston has many great restaurants and there is a lot of diversity in the food. There is a lot of diversity in the people, but the diversity tends to decrease if you move out to the suburbs. Suburbs that are nice include Sugarland, Katy, The Woodlands. The schools are much better in the burbs, but the taxes tend to be higher and there is very little public transportation so you have to drive everywhere.
I hope that gives you a fair view of Houston. Good luck on your move!
