Common Mistakes on Federal Income Tax
Form
Don't forget to sign your tax return for
both you and your spouse!
Believe it or not some taxpayers forget
to sign their tax return! Some of them forget to have their
spouse sign tax return. If a taxpayer files a joint return with
his or her spouse, both persons need to sign and date the tax
return or the IRS will reject the return filed.
Don't forget to attach Copy B of W-2
forms
If you file your tax return electronically,
you don't need to attach W-2 forms. However if you are still
using paper return, don't forget to attach Copy B of W-2 forms
from all employers to your tax return. Only one tax return
needs to be filed per person even if there are lots of jobs and
a lot of information to fit into one tax return.
Don't forget to attach 1099-R forms
The 1099-R forms also need to be attached to
your tax return to show tax withholding.
Don't forget to submit and file with your
tax return all Schedules and tax forms
The more complicated a tax return is
the more tax forms and Schedules need to be filed with the tax
return. Don't forget to file all of the forms needed. You don't
have to submit worksheets to the IRS but the IRS will reject a
tax return if not all tax forms required are present.
Paying taxes
If a taxpayer owes the IRS taxes then he or
she needs to enclose a check or money order with the tax
return. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the
United States Treasury, not the
IRS. The taxpayer needs to provide, with payment:
- the correct
name,
- address,
- social security
number,
- daytime telephone
number,
- tax year and
- tax form number (2006 F-1040) on
the front of your payment (never send cash!).
